Something old, something new,
something borrowed (something blue)
In the English-speaking world, there is a superstition that a bride should fulfil four requirements in order to have good luck in her marriage: She should carry something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. These tiles, which have been treated with cyanotype, also fulfil these same requirements. Due to its sleek surface, the cyanotype solution penetrates the traces of wear and tear and is thus made visible. Something old becomes something new. Thus, the found object is what has been borrowed. The blue is what the eye now sees.
This work was made possible by the generous donation of the found tiles by Kunsthof Nia e.V. and produced as part of its residency programme ‘in circuit 2024’ with a grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Thuringia.
