Vitor Mattos

born 1995 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Vitor Mattos is a visual artist and architect based in Weimar, Germany. His work is centered on the notion of progress as the flagship of modernity, which seeks a constant improvement and abandonment of the obsolete. The promise of something better reveals itself to be never fully realized, as the invention of modern solutions provokes modern problems that require even more modern solutions. Modernity is the live action of endless scroll. Simultaneously, the past remains undigested, engendering a foggy, complex, undecipherable world. Mattos’ works investigates the intersections between past and future in the storytelling process of History and its reverberations on the sphere of the individual. Thereby he often dives into themes such as trauma, power, identity, body, sanity and sexuality.

Mattos navigates between the fields of photography, performance, video, installation and paperwork. He also works as a photographer and video-maker based on commissions.
