The artist's face stands out against a bright background. Viewers are thrown into his intimate sphere and confronted with his humanity from uncomfortable proximity. Mattos is occupied with compulsive movements: his internal conflicts take shape. But the show must go on: He occasionally finds a break for a smile.
Mattos uses his own body and neurological syndrome as a metaphor for the constraints required to live in society. Despite pain and hardship, people must suppress their feelings in order to remain competitive. The impending catastrophe of an increasingly complex world situation presents itself to be ever more threatening, yet the danger is not enough to encourage revolt: normality must be ensured despite the horror.
